One of the missions of the expedition consisted in the conservation of a landing barge — a piece of heritage of the Normandy landings. To achieve this goal, the engineers from Dassault System implemented various tools.
The use of a 3D laser scanner to digitalise the only surviving example allows to obtain a point cloud of its external shape. Then, 3D modelling based on the original drawings allows to precise the elements of its internal structure.
It can be determined that the way this barge was designed and the technical solutions that were chosen were guided by its functional analysis.
